The Californios

The trip to California was definetly not a perfect trip to take, and life in California had hardships, too. Despite Mexico owned California, the Mexican government had neglected because of how far it was from the capital city, Mexico city. Soliders didn't get paid, and so took from the Californios to get their needs, whom they were supposed to protect. The governors were corrupt, dishonest, and unskilled. The U.s. took over mexico in 1846, because of the Mexican-American war. The Californios were soon not the majority. Many landowners lost thousands of acres of land because of legal disputes. About the land loss, this was because documents were not formal, and so land was easily lost. Many people stormed in through the gold rush, taking lots of land. There were unfair trials over the dispute of land, and so many Californios lost land.
